Coming to you from San Andreas, CA. The Facebook Marketplace listing states the Overland is a 1911 model, but the astute among you (or those who can google well, like us!) recognize it as a 1920-ish model.
A quick side by side comparison of the two model years, courtesy of the Willys Overland Knight Registry:
1911- Note the short angular hood and flat fenders, and the extended front frame rails
1920 – Note the rounded, & louvered hood and left-hand drive.
Clearly this hooptie needs a lot of work. As always, we hope further inspection reveals a solid car. If it has been in California for most of the past 100+ years, maybe the rust will be limited to what we can see in the doors. {Wishful thinking…} The running boards are removed, but would be easy to fabricate if they are lost forever. Hooptie Dreamer (our observer of the obvious) just pointed out the tires are shot too. The front passenger tires looks like an early pneumatic (fancy word for air), yet the front driver side seems to be solid rubber. Both sides appear to be original wooden wheels with a center retaining nut.
Assuming an original drivetrain, this ride will have a 4-cylinder engine and a 3-speed manual transmission. Nothing get’s past Hooptie Collector; he notes from the last photo that the gas lines have been altered with what appears to be steel pipe. It’s safe to assume other modifications have been made as well. Unfortunately, the listing description only states that it doesn’t run and there is no paperwork.
What would you do with this 1920 Willys Overland Tourer? Maybe it’s a good starting point for a parade tourer? Or, possibly a rat rod alternative to the Ford Model A? Although, that angled front leaf spring layout, mechanical brakes, and lack of available parts would prove to be a challenge in making this a hot rod.
Here in Hooptie Nation, we love anything with years of barn dust on it. However, at the $2,500 listing price, we think this jalopy deserves in someone else’s collection.
