This 1970 GMC Tow Truck is another Facebook Marketplace find. It is located in Russelville, AR; head west from Little Rock on I-40 for about an hour and you’re in the neighborhood.
In episode #6 of the Hooptie Joyride show we covered a similar tuck, a 1968 GMC 5500, sent in from a subscriber. This 1970 wrecker also has the big block V6 (yes, you read that right), but transmits power through a 5-speed transmission and a 2-speed rear axle. The listing states that it has run, albeit few years ago. The photos do seem to indicate a complete engine with all of the accessories; of course we’re hoping it would run with only minimal effort. Air brakes provide the stopping power and the pump seems to be in place.
This truck sports one other cool feature that’s a first for us. It has a traction control switch for dry or slippery surface:
The business end is of unknown origin, and could possibly be custom made. The light bar, boom and supports are all tubular steel, and the wheel lift looks different than most we’ve seen.
The exterior appears to be mostly rust free, so perhaps this truck has lived in the south all of it’s life. The only thing it needs is a good power wash and scrub. As we mentioned in the episode linked above, for this Action Line era of both Chevy and GMC trucks, the cabs are interchangeable throughout most of the models. Good to know if you need a full cab or some patches.
Similarly the interior looks pretty solid as well, and should clean up real nice. A little duct tape, a seat cover, and a radio and we’d call it complete.
Hard to believe we don’t have a tow truck in the fleet given all of the non-running and frequently breaking rides we own. This would definitely see some work, and at a listed price of $2,000, it sure is tempting. Then again, it could be a major contributing factor in acquiring more junk. Maybe we could earn some cash on the side?
